How do I hang my new painting?

When you purchase one of my paintings, the appropriate hanging hardware, including nails and or screws, will be included in your shipment free of charge!

Lighter paintings (up to 50 x 50 cm) can be hung with nails. Heavier paintings (from 60 x 60 cm) should be hung with screws.

What you will need to hang your new painting:

For installation with nails

  • a Helper (optional)
  • a folding Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Nail(s)
  • Hammer
  • Broom and Dustpan

For installation with screws

  • a Helper (optional)
  • a folding Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Screw(s)
  • Plastic sleeves (fitting to the size of the screw)
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Vacuum (optional)

Before you put any holes in your wall, have a helper hold the painting in place so you can check the location and be sure it’s what you want.

Paintings are usually hung so that the middle (from top to bottom) of the painting is at eye level (Some exceptions are made in dining areas or other places where one mainly sits – in this case have your helper hold the painting against the wall to determine the appropriate height.)

To find eye level, measure the height of the painting and divide that by two. Add about 148 cm to this. Using that number, make a small mark on the wall at that height.

If your painting requires two nails (or screws), measure the exact distance from middle to middle of the hanging hardware (mounted on the back of the painting). Mark the second spot on the wall this distance horizontally from the first mark. Use the level to make sure it is at exactly the same height as the first nail or screw.

If you are using nails, drive the nail gently in to the wall so the head is angled up toward the ceiling. Many people make the mistake of pounding a nail straight into the wall, but this is not the most stable way. Leave about 1 cm of the nail sticking out.

If you’re using screws, mark the spots for the holes in the same manner as described above. Drill the holes using a drill bit that is one size smaller than the screw you will be inserting. Then, insert the plastic sleeve into the hole. After that, you can screw in both screws. Leave about 1 cm of the screw sticking out.

Hang the painting. Step back at least five feet from the artwork and look at it to see if it is straight. If you’re unsure, check it with the level.
